The Significance of Black August
Honoring Our Legacy

Why We Remember
Black August is a time for remembrance, reflection, and radical action. It is a month dedicated to honoring the legacy of Black resistance fighters who fought for freedom and liberation. The month-long observance commemorates significant historical events and figures, from the Haitian Revolution (the only successful slave revolt to result in an independent nation) to the daring rebellion led by Nat Turner. By remembering these ancestors, we connect their struggle to our own, reaffirming our commitment to the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
The MOVE Organization and Assata Shakur:
Stories of Resistance
MOVE
Founded in the 1970s in Philadelphia, The MOVE organization was a Black liberation and back-to-nature group led by John Africa. The group promoted a lifestyle of radical self-sufficiency, communal living, and animal rights, often clashing with city authorities over their beliefs and practices. This tense relationship culminated in two tragic confrontations. On May 13, 1985, the Philadelphia Police Department dropped an explosive device on the MOVE house, resulting in a fire that killed 11 people—including five children—and destroyed 65 homes.
Assata Shakur
Assata Shakur is a celebrated and controversial figure in the Black liberation movement. As a member of the Black Liberation Army, she was targeted by the FBI's COINTELPRO program and was wrongfully convicted of murder. In 1979, she escaped from prison and was granted political asylum in Cuba. Shakur’s defiance of the American justice system has made her a symbol of Black resistance and a reminder of the historical injustices faced by activists. Her story challenges us to consider what justice truly means and for whom it is intended.
