November 2025: Cultivating Liberatory Gratitude🍂

Gathering with Integrity

As we step into November, the focus often turns to Thanksgiving. For many, this is a time for family, food, and reflection on abundance. But for those of us committed to equity and liberation, we know this holiday also carries a painful, complicated history tied to colonialism, land theft, and genocide.

At Seeds of Change Consulting, we believe that true gratitude must be active, reciprocal, and just. It shouldn't be a passive feeling or an obligation; it should be a revolutionary act that recognizes our deep interdependence and motivates us to repair harm. This month, we're inviting you to join us in redefining what it means to be truly thankful by embracing practices that honor Indigenous sovereignty and move us toward liberation.

☞ Liberatory Gratitude: An Action, Not a Feeling

What does liberatory gratitude mean? It means shifting away from individualistic, consumer-driven notions of thanks and moving toward systemic accountability.

  • It's Reciprocal: True gratitude acknowledges that we benefit from the labor, land, and resources provided by others. It asks: What debt do I owe, and how do I actively pay it back?

  • It's Interdependent: We are deeply connected to the land and to all communities. Our thanks should extend to the Indigenous land we stand on, the unseen labor that feeds us, and the workers who make our comfort possible.

  • It's Political: We must examine the systems that produce abundance for some while creating scarcity for others. True thanks involves working to dismantle those systems.

Ask yourself: Does my gratitude require me to change something about my behavior, consumption, or giving patterns?

☪︎ Practical Ways to Honor Indigenous Sovereignty

We cannot separate the act of giving thanks in late November from the ongoing reality of Indigenous life, resistance, and sovereignty. Honoring Indigenous people means listening to their leadership and supporting their self-determination.

Commit to Land Acknowledgment

Every place has original stewards. Start by learning the name of the Nation(s) whose ancestral land you live on. This is a foundational act of recognition.

Amplify and Donate (Shift Your Resources)

An impactful way to honor Indigenous people is to directly support Indigenous-led organizations and causes - especially those focused on language revitalization, cultural preservation, and land back movements.

🎧 Read, Watch, and Listen

Commit to shifting the media and literature you consume toward Indigenous voices. True honoring requires ongoing education and amplification. Read a book by an Indigenous author (e.g. Tommy Orange, Robin Wall Kimmerer), watch a documentary directed by an Indigenous filmmaker (e.g. Sterlin Harjo), or subscribe to an Indigenous news outlet. Let their perspectives guide your understanding, not colonized accounts of history.

Making Our Thanks Meaningful

This year, let's move into the holiday season with a deeper sense of responsibility. Liberatory gratitude is a practice of constantly asking: Who's missing from the table? and What structures are actually upholding the very comfort we're thankful for? It's tough and important work. We're grateful for our community and your commitment and curiosity to learn. Let's make our actions louder than our words this season.
