Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

A Rich Tapestry: The History of Our Celebration
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15), we invite you to explore the rich history, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. This month, we're taking the opportunity to honor the people, traditions, and stories that have shaped our world. We hope this newsletter serves as a guide for you to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the vibrancy of Hispanic heritage.
Why September 15th? The Start of It All
Ever wonder why Hispanic Heritage Month begins in the middle of September? It's not a random date! The month kicks off on September 15th to honor a pivotal moment in Latin American history. This is the day when Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all celebrate their independence from Spain.
This shared date is a powerful reminder of the collective journey toward self-determination and the deep cultural ties that bind these nations together. By starting our celebration here, we're rooting Hispanic Heritage Month in a history of independence and resilience. It's an opportunity for us to reflect on the diverse stories of freedom and cultural identity that define so much of the Hispanic and Latino community.
Voices of Change: A Profile on Dolores Huerta
This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're celebrating Dolores Huerta, a co-founder of the United Farm Workers and a powerful force in the fight for agricultural laborers' rights. Her activism, rooted in non-violent protest, secured better wages and conditions for farmworkers and inspired a new generation of activists.
Culture as Power: Preserving Traditions
Culture is more than just customs and art; it's a powerful act of preservation and resistance. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're taking a closer look at how reclaiming cultural identity becomes a powerful act of defiance. For example, the Afro-Cuban religion Santería masterfully blends Yoruba traditions with Catholicism, demonstrating the resilience of a people determined to hold on to their heritage.
Standing in Solidarity: Action and Community
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is about more than just history; it’s a call to action. To get involved, consider supporting local mutual aid networks and attending community organizing events. You can also directly support the community by shopping at Hispanic-owned businesses and visiting local cultural centers.

The month encourages people to read books by Black authors to promote literacy and support Black writers, publishers, and bookstores. Founded in Detroit in 1980 by Malik Yakini, Black Reading Month is a separate initiative from the literary events that occur during Black History Month in February. It emphasizes the importance of personally engaging with Black literature and supporting Black-owned businesses.
